Street Photography Tips for editing / selecting images.

Editing is the hardest part of street photography. It is harder than being confronted by strangers or getting lost in the bad part of town or trying to focus manually with the Fuji X100.

Just to clarify, for the purposes of this post, when I say editing I am referring to the process of selecting the images that “make the cut” and discarding the ones that don’t. My decision process when looking at one of my images usually goes something like this: “wow, this one is fantastic!…..maybe not…..well, it could be……ah.. whatever, I’m keeping it….. I guess….not sure…… yes!”. At the risk of discombobulating such a scientific and rigorous process I started to think if there could be a better way to more easily select images that have higher impact and meaning and that will make me feel a little better about my photographs. First of all I want to thank David and his team for this great honor, it is indeed a great joy for me!  My name is Vitor Tripologos, I was born in Porto in the year, 1964. The passion for photography was born with my father, we had a Petri machine on which I took my first steps into photography. Later I followed the trend to digital but I’m still a big fan of film. Taking pictures of strangers can be intimidating.If you ask the moment may be gone, but if you don´t there may be a bigger problem. How do you decide to photograph strangers?

These girls were selling coconut jewellery at one of the surf breaks in Santa Teresa (Costa Rica). When I asked if I could take their picture they immediately got into this pose. This maybe the global effect of Facebook profile pages.

Look-up ‘Street Photography’ in Wikipedia and the attempt to define it starts with ‘… a form of documentary photography’. But is it really? Both Street Photography and Documentary photography are well understood traditions, so why is it that the former is so easily confused for the latter?
